Some of you already know this, but I've been waiting to post the news until I had something to show. With the new year ahead of me, I decided it was time to get out of consulting and back into product development; this time with a company called nomee. What can I say, I like product development. What is nomee you ask? What is that thing on the side of my blog? First let me say, Nomee is not another social website. It's a tool, built with Adobe AIR, to organize and monitor them all. If you think about it, if you put all of the websites you've signed up, and everything you've posted about yourself together -- you've created a virtual brand for yourself. Wouldn't it be cool if there was a way to control what part of that online brand people see? facebook for friends, linked-in for co-workers, etc.. Add in the annoying problem of trying to stay on top of all of these sites and all of your friends. How many hours a day/week do you spend going to different sites to see if anything has changed; or have you given up? These are the problems we are solving with Nomee. With nomee:
- You can control what things about yourself that you want to share with others.
- You can follow your friends. Nomee can monitor over 100 different websites. When your friends do things online you are alerted, then you can decide if you care and want to open the item or if you want to ignore it.
- You can stay in touch. Nomee keeps your contact information synchronized with your friends and families. When they need to know your new phone number - they look in nomee. When they need your new address - they look in nomee.
- You can publish yourself. like I have on this blog, or my facebook page. On the right you'll see my public nomee card (they can be public or private).
As we are starting our public beta and getting ready for web 2.0, check out our beta, you can download it now. Go to nomee.com, or even better, click the follow me link on the bottom of my nomee card (on the right of my blog) and add me to your nomee desktop.

I've written 2 versions of this app myself and now Flickr has done it. This week Flickr added support for geo tagging photos. There are still some things I don't like about the Flickr version. For instance I hate that all of the photos are broken into pages of 250 photos. My current count is 4000+ geo tagged photos, which means 20+ pages. And I'd love to add a time line so I can see photos taken by a date range. Perhaps a little animation so I can watch photos of my travels - I went there, then there, then there. But, this is Flickr. The company with a simple api. And with the new support for Geo data in the api building an application like this will be even easier. My last version took 1 http request to get the photos and 1-2 more http requests per photo to get the geo data, depending on if it was stored in the EXIF data or as a Tag. As you can guess that could result in hundreds of http requests for 1 search. The updates the Flickr Api, should let me consolidate this down to 1 http request. Guess it's time to start on the 3rd version of my Flickr/Flex2/Map Mashup. Check it out. My World, according to Flickr.

Some of you might have heard this already; I'm both happy and sad to admit it's true. After 8 great years at Adobe/Macromedia/Allaire I've decided it's time to move on and start my own consulting business with Jeff Tapper. What can I say the entrepreneurial itch needed to be scratched. Jeff, Angie, and I will be focusing on ColdFusion, Flex2, and other Adobe products. You might think this is no big deal, perhaps you are thinking what the F$@%, or maybe it?s how can I use this to my advantage. ;) However, don't worry I've left the ColdFusion team in good shape. There are some exciting things planned for Scorpio, but you'll need to wait and see, I still can't tell you what is planned. ;) So if you are looking for some expert help drop me or Jeff an email. My new email is "mikenimer at yahoo dot com".
I thought I would share this photo/map application that I've been working on for a few a few weekends now. It's my buzzword bingo app, a Flex2, Flickr, Gooogle mashup. Snoopy in the desert
download the flex 2 beta 2 player
Some of you might remember a photo/map application I did a few years back. (Yes I'm a sucker for maps.) However, that was before the flick api and google maps were released. Not to mention it was very slow. With Flex2 and the flickr/google apis that are out there now, this was a lot easier to do. Thanks to flex2 I had a working prototype in just a few hours. And the experience is a lot better too. The first time around just finding and displaying a map was a pain, this time it was the easy part. And with the flickr api I didn't have to write any back end code to parse thousands of photos. Instead I just needed to spend many nights uploading them all to flickr (I still have more to upload but I reached my flickr monthly limit already, I need to wait for May to finish). I'm not done yet, some of my future plans include:
- Allow others to link to this app, to show their own geotagged flickr photos. (I need to speed it up, and document the url params)
- Speed up the flickr http calls with some server side threading. (flickr wants you to make a separate request for each photo to get the exif/tag data = SLOW)
- Add support for Yahoo and ESRI maps too.
- Add a regular flickr photo browser
- Make a better looking slideshow popup (anyone have one already?)
- Add some kind of timeline slider, like the one on google finance. (anyone have one already?)

9 months ago she said yes and 2 weeks ago she said "I do!".
Granted I'm biased, but, I must be the luckiest guy in the world! Feb 18th, Angela and I were lucky enough to get many of our friends and family together in a beautiful location for our wedding ( puerto vallarta ). If you're interested you can view our photos here.
If you are thinking about getting married soon, I really have to recommend a destination wedding. Back at home people come for a few hours, say hello and then go back to there normal lives. However, with a destination wedding everyone has to get away and relax (yes it's possible at a wedding). We ended up having 4 days with friends and family (some who I haven't seen for 10+ years). This gave us time to catch up, hang out, and drink more tequila shots then I thought anyone could.
So now it's time to get back to work, there is still some cool things left to do for ColdFusion and Flex2 integration. And a quick apology to everyone who has sent me an email in the last 2-3 weeks, I'm working through them now. I'll try to get back to you soon.

29 states and 13252 miles later the time for our sabbatical has ended. If this is the first you've read about the trip my fiancé (she said yes during the trip!) and I decided to take a 7 week road trip around the country. I have to say it was an amazing trip. However, like all good things it must come to an end. If you have emailed my over the last few weeks I will be going through my email and answering all of the emails during the next few days.
Facts:
29 states
4 countries (US, Canada, St. Marteen, Nassau)
1576 photos taken
13252 driven miles.
$1.99 - cheapest gas, in South Dakota (Texas was $2.05)
$2.70 - Most expense gas, in Montana ($2.69 in California)
Longest Stretch - Dallas to Salt Lake City in 24 hours.
Thoughts:
I have a whole new respect for the history of the American Indians. Photos can not do justice to Carlsbad Caverns.Having a National Park close for 3 hours for "missile testing" right when you arrive - sucks!Mt. Rushmore is smaller then you would expect and nearby Crazy Horse Monument will be amazing when it's finished. (Mt. Rushmore will fit inside the head of the Crazy Horse Monument)Wyoming was a surprise. Before this trip I-80 was my only knowledge of Wyoming. However, during this trip we drove through the North-West section and couldn't believe how amazing the scenery was. It is possible to forget what day of the week it is!The Nation Park swag business must be a billion dollar industry.

4 days into the trip on Tuesday morning (6:40am) I asked Angela Renkosik to marry me. Lucky for me after 5 minutes of stun'd silence and a few "what's this" (I thought the ring was supposed to speak for itself ;) she did say YES! I have to say it's weird to use the word fiance, but I'm getting used to it and I like it. I should have done this sooner! If you are interested, here are the pics
http://www.angelarenkosik.com/angie/index.cfm?page=photo_display&key=50 I've also created a new photo gallery just for our trip.

You've heard of other macromedians taking these trips and now it is time for me to take my sabbatical. My girlfriend Angie and I will be leaving in the morning on a 7 week road trip all around America (East coast, West Coast, and lot's of wandering around the South West.) It's a little funny I'm about to leave on a trip that I've been planning on for over a year (I postponed it a year to ship blackstone). Yet I have very few things planned - Just the way I like it. I will try to post photo's as we go here. A warning, I will have very limited access to email, if any at all. Luckily there is a great ColdFusion community who can help if you have any cfform or CF7 questions. See you in June!
